The 2006 Season

SHELSLEY 2006 STARTS WITH DOUBLE BTD FOR DERYK YOUNG

Deryk Doubly Good!

The second century of Shelsley Walsh started on Saturday 13th May with sharp showers but by the end of Sunday everyone agreed it had been a glorious weekend as the sun belatedly tried to break through the haze.

It takes more than a little wet weather to discourage Midland Automobile Club members and the membership turned out with their guests and many more crowded the revamped spectator terraces to take in the high speed action.

It was local driver and Shelsley specialist Deryk Young who took best time of day twice to earn his new title of Best Time Deryk! He told us "Sue and I are far too busy with our respective businesses to campaign the whole British Hill Climb Championship season so we are thrilled to come to our local hill which is the most famous of them all" he continued "and to capture BTD twice in one weekend is doubly good!" His two BTD times were 26.71 on Saturday and 25.97 on Sunday.

Whilst Deryk captured the BTD crown there was plenty of other competition to keep the spectators happy.

On Saturday we saw competition in the Aldon HSA and invited Championships which included those as diverse as: the Healey Sports Challenge, the Chester Motor Club, the Morgan Speed Championship, the Porsche Club Speed Championship and the Reliant Sabre and Scimitar Owners Club Sprint & Hill Climb Championship.

On Sunday, Midland Speed Championship points were at stake along with other Championships including Ginetta and Triumph Sprint & Speed.

With Deryk Young taking both BTD awards, best MAC member on both days was Bill Hutchins in the ex Sandra Tomlin Pilbeam MP58H with a 28.18 on Saturday and 28.44 on Sunday.

Among other notables present were 6 times British Hill Climb Champion Tony Marsh competing in his Gould GR55 on Saturday. Peter Cox wheeled out the newly rebuilt ex Russ Ward Chevron B42. On Sunday Peter invited Shelsley identity Keith 'Bomber' Harris to share the car and he happily burbled up the hill for a 29.26.

Basil Davenports immortal BHD Special and Spider 2 were also campaigned over the weekend to ensure a massive slice of Shelsley nostalgia for aficionados.
