Shelsley May Midlander a success despite damp conditions
The first Shelsley Walsh meeting of 2009 was a success despite the ever present damp conditions on Bank Holiday Monday. Lovely spring conditions in Sunday practice deteriorated on Monday and left early class runners struggling for grip. The rain cleared and returned three times but failed to dampen a great day of competition.
British number three Trevor Willis (Aylesbury) triumphed in both run-offs and took Best Time of the Day (BTD) when he triumphed in the second run-off with a time of 29.25 seconds driving his 2.8 litre OMS-Powertec racing car. Second BTD went to course specialist and British number nine Deryk Young (Yarkhill Herefordshire) with a time of 30.58 seconds in the first run-off. The Herefordshire driver finished second in both run-offs in his Gould-Judd GR51B.
Market Rasen garage proprietor and former Yarkhill resident Andrew Platt took third in each of the two run-offs for his most successful Shelsley Walsh driving his Dallara racing car.
Another starring role went to Will Hall (Romsley Worcestershire) in his tiny 1600cc Force-Suzuki racing car who took a fifth in run-off one and sixth in run-off two. A best ever Shelsley result for Tim Davies (Narberth Dyfed) driving a 2 litre Pilbeam who took fourth in run-off one following up with seventh in run-off two. Warwick's John Chalmers had a good day in his 2 litre Ralt racing car scoring well in both run-offs.
But the real stars of the day were undoubtedly the marshalling and rescue teams who had a total of five serious incidents to cope with. These volunteer specialists used all of their experience and training to perform in an exemplary fashion to ensure that the five drivers involved were rescued quickly and safely. It is satisfying to report that nobody suffered any injuries although some of the machinery will need extensive repairs.
After the meeting Shelsley Walsh Chief Marshal Chris Wolverson said 'I am intensely proud of every member of today's team who are all a credit to British Motor Sport Marshalling'. He added 'This proves the value of the extensive training that we all undergo'.
