The Big One
21st August 2010 to Sunday 22nd August 2010

Another tie for Merrick and Moran.

For the first time in British Hill Climb history there was a second tied win in the same season as two drivers finished in a time of 23.53 seconds at the Worcestershire hill. As if that was not unusual enough it even featured the same two drivers in Chris Merrick (Stroud) and Scott Moran (Ludlow) as happened the first time at Gurston Down back in May.

The current championship leader Martin Groves(Bicester) was fourth in the first run-off and with Moran closing to within two points at the lunch break Groves was spurred into greater effort. Having endured a tyre problem in round 25 that made the car handle badly a change of rubber paid off for Martin with a win and Fastest Time of the Day in round 26.

Bromyard driver Joy Hoyle again beat the men in her class driving the very fast Caterham-Vauxhall that she shares with Ludlow's Dave Wilson.

Stourport driver Gary Stephens was on top form in his Mallock sports car, defeating all comers in the Hill Climb Super Sports Car Class going within less than a second of his class record.

Local driver Mark Goodyear from just over the hill in Great Witley won the 600cc racing car class in a tiny OMS Hornet.

Will Hall from Romsley dominated the very large 1600cc racing car category in his Force PC that is unpainted to save that last kilogram of weight.

Only one class record fell in the event and this went to Scottish invader Les Mutch (Aberdeen) in his howling Dax Rush. Bromyard driver Phillip Dallow was in top form driving his heavily modified Peugeot winning the 2 litre category of the Modified Limited Production Car Class.

Shelsley Walsh also hosted the Alfa Romeo Owners Club who celebrated the Centenary of the famous Italian make. Many hundreds of owners of classic Alfa's brought their cars to the event and displayed them in a special reserved area with a Concours d'Elegance for the best of the best. Special classes of Alfa Romeo's also competed in the event.
