Marshalling

Shelsley Marshals watching a car on the hillThe sport of Hill Climbing has three main ingredients being A Venue, Competitors and Marshals.

All three are equally important but Marshals at this time seem to be a rare breed. Numbers of volunteer marshals seem to be diminishing - it is increasingly difficult to attract Marshals to speed events. We at the MAC believe a number of factors are responsible for this situation and they may be an increasing number of Hill Climb events and sprints, The price of attending these events, and possibly the truest of them all... people don't like getting up at 6am in the morning after going out on the town the night before to go to an event. Who knows?

Looking on the other side of the action it can be a very rewarding experience to be involved as well as being very close to the action.

Shelsley Marshals group photoShelsley Walsh has a very good team of marshals who have a full day's training every year. Newcomers and inexperienced marshals- and there are always some there - are placed with experienced marshals so no-one is ever out of their depth.

Dealing with incidents as they happen is possibly the best form of training you can get anyhow.

When working as a marshal at Shelsley Walsh you would be at one of the five main marshalling points up the hill acting as Flag Marshal, Fire Marshal or general assistant.

So if you like Motor Sport and like to be close to the action - at times from areas inaccessible from the public - Marshalling can be very rewarding.
